Freedom of Religion and Tolerance in Kyrgyzstan: Research Findings

Most residents of Kyrgyzstan rate the level of freedom of religion in their regions highly. In response to the question, “In your opinion, how freely can residents of your region practice their religion in accordance with their beliefs?” 66.6% of respondents answered “very freely,” 23.7% — “mostly freely,” 3.7% — “not quite freely,” 0.4% — “not freely at all,” and 4.6% found it difficult to answer.

In addition, to the statement “Citizens should respect each person’s right to practice any religion or not practice any,” 79.5% of respondents answered “strongly agree” (58.5%) and “mostly agree” (21%). This reflects a high level of tolerance and mutual respect in matters of religion. At the same time, 10.5% answered “mostly disagree,” 7.2% — “strongly disagree,” and 2.8% found it difficult to answer.

This study was developed as part of the implementation of the Action Plan for the Concept of State Policy of the Kyrgyz Republic in the Religious Sphere for 2022–2026.

The purpose of the monitoring is to obtain data that will make it possible to analyze the dynamics of the influence of the religious factor on the socio-economic and political situation in the Kyrgyz Republic, as well as to identify the level of religiosity of the population.

In total, 1,546 people aged 18 and older were surveyed across all regions of the republic, as well as in the cities of Bishkek and Osh. The sample for the survey was formed on the basis of a multi-stage stratified sample using the quota method, representing the population of our republic by key indicators—gender, age, and nationality.

This sample size ensures results with a margin of error of (±4%) and a confidence level of 97 at the national level.

The survey contains more than 50 questions.
